Dear Miss JW,
If my holiday dress is vintage and sequinned in gold and black, what's the best make-up to match? Would it be light lipstick with smokey eyes or light eye makeup and deep red lipstick?
Denise
Dear Denise,
I would without a doubt go for dark smoky eyes and light lips! Your dress sounds gorgeously dramatic, and black and gold are powerful colours that are already extremely noticeable and glam. Not to mention that sequins just call out for attention.
There is no doubt that when you wear the dress you're describing, you'll almost need a microphone and spotlight wherever you walk. Since you'll already be standing out, there's no reason for your makeup to be overdone. Instead of competing with your outfit, just compliment it subtly with makeup that's less drag and more fab.
Remember the either/or rule: either a dramatic face and toned down clothing, or a stand-out outfit and subtle makeup. Take a look at some of these style stars below for inspiration in terms of colour tones and application:
To create your own smoky eye, M.A.C currently have mini holiday eye kits featuring four stackable crushed metallic eye shadows in a range of delicious holiday colours!
Till next time,
Miss JW
