Dragon Boat Furniture

Eco-chic furniture boutique TREE turns trash into treasure

Every year in June, we (the wimpy) watch from land as our muscular and more athletic friends paddle ferociously to the finish lines in colourful boats made out of teak trees. But do you ever wonder what happens to the boats after all the dragon boat festivities are over?

Instead of getting unceremoniously disposed of, one Hong Kong company has rescued a 30-year-old, 15m long traditional teak dragon boat and turned it into a limited edition collection of one-of-a-kind shelves, coffee tables and consoles.

The 18-piece collection is created by TREE, Hong Kong's first eco-chic furniture boutique, who has also turned Indonesian fishing boats and railroad sleepers into 100% unique contemporary designs under the ethos, 'Reclaimed, Recycled, Reloved'.

The old dragon boat originally belonged to the Lantau Boat Club and was passed onto TREE in the hopes that they might be able to turn their beloved boat into a piece of Hong Kong's heritage.

Can't wait to own a piece of Hong Kong history? TREE’s limited edition Dragon Boat furniture collection will be available for purchase from 1st June 2011 at Horizon Plaza flagship store in Ap Lei Chau.
