Q & A with Celebrity Makeup Artist: Gary Chung

Find out how to wear this season's hottest makeup trends
Celebrity makeup artist Gary Chung is unbelievably smooth and wrinkle-free -- what's his secret?

Dressed in a newsboy cap, plaid blazer and faded blue jeans, Gary Chung pranced around and cracked jokes in between applying makeup effortlessly to the model at MiraSpa's Autumn Glow VIP event yesterday, who was transformed from a plain Jane to sexy siren right in front of our eyes.

The audience watched in utter silence and awe, not only at Chung's amazing makeup skills but perhaps even more at the sight of his unbelievably smooth and glowing skin.

"People who know me know how old I am, but let me tell you, there's not a single wrinkle on my face," he said with a sparkle in his eyes. And let us tell you, we were face-to-face with the man (note: fully grown adult man and not boy) and he's not kidding -- his skin is as smooth as a Pixar animation.

Wanting to glean some wisdom from the celebrity makeup artist, we sat down with Chung for a quick Q&A about this season's hottest makeup trends (see our video interview on Facebook).

LifestyleAsia: You mentioned that bushy eyebrows are making a comeback this fall. What tips do you have for growing them out?

Gary Chung: It takes time! Try growing them out for 1-2 months and don't pluck any hairs, even if they start to grow weirdly, just keep them there. In the meantime, use makeup to help by drawing a bottom line underneath your brow and smudging it so that it will look thicker, naturally.

LSA: Red lips are another big trend this season. How do we find the right shade and wear it well?

GC: To make red lips work for yourself, you have to make the shape look really nice because the colour is quite strong. So, alway start with the lip pencil and remember these three steps: draw the peak first, then the corners of your mouth, and then draw the bottom while smiling. That way, you'll get the perfect shape first before filling in the colour.

LSA: What's the biggest makeup crime you've seen?

GC: When the foundation colour is No. 1 on the face and No. 9 on the neck. You can pick a slightly whiter tone for the foundation but try not to go too white. For red lips, I see a lot of people with lipstick on their teeth, so remember to check your teeth to see if they are clean and use a Q-tip to wipe them before going out.

LSA: If we only had five minutes to do our makeup, what are the essentials we should focus on?

GC: Start with concealer and then use powder foundation, it's the quickest. Then, focus on just one feature. Maybe it's red lips, or if you have really fine lips, focus on the eyebrows or apply eyeliner.

LSA: Lastly, makeup on the MTR. Are you for or against it?

GC: A bit of lipgloss is fine, but when you have to use a mirror and many tools, that doesn't look very proper. But, a little touchup is acceptable.
