Tastemaker: Morgan Guth, founder of The Well Dressed Workout

Believe it or not, we are still riding on the activewear trend. If you want to know secrets to toned arms and abs, Morgan Guth, the head trainer from Tribe and blogger from The Well Dressed Workout has got you covered. Mini in size, but not in strength, the woman who once called Sydney her base is now in Bangkok ready to turn heads with her street-casual style both in the studios and out on the streets. We spoke with Guth recently to find out more about what the cycling craze is all about and how to stay stylishly fit.

How did the welldressedworkout blog come about?
I’ve always wanted to start a fashion blog and create something of my own. But I could never really motivate myself to get it going until I fell in love with the juxtaposition of fashion and yoga. The Well Dressed Work Out isn’t really a blog, I see it more as a platform to stay updated on the latest active wear trends, yoga and fitness studios across Asia and Australia.

Tell us a little bit more about your journey as a yoga/cycling instructor from Sydney to Hong Kong and now you call Bangkok home?
I started teaching Spin in Hong Kong at XYZ. It really gave me the best platform to become a spin instructor. At the time, the studio just opened and Hong Kongers were still learning about this style of spin class which is very much the same here in Bangkok. XYZ is now in its third year with another Causeway Bay location opened and with out a doubt one of the top studios in Hong Kong.

Shortly after moving back Australia, I was approached to join a Bangkok-based Studio called TRIBE, again indoor spin and an amazing barre studio. I got to train up the trainers here at Tribe and open the studio. Seeing it grow and the trainers develop and inspire others has been an incredible ride.

Which has been your favourite city to live in so far?
There is something in every city that I love. I can’t just choose one; each offer something so different. But home for me will always be Sydney. It’s a place where I can fall in love with over and over again. However, lifestyle-wise, I would choose Bangkok any day!

What’s the fitness scene like in Bangkok at the moment? It seems like cycling is the place to be to get a sweat on?
The fitness scene in Bangkok is on a serious incline. I’ve only been in the city six months and have seen so many boutique studios have popped up, from yoga on paddle boards to spin studios to circuit training and personal training gyms. It is really exciting to see a city like Bangkok growing so quickly and the response has been incredible. They even have a New York-founded barre class, Physique 57 Studio. At the moment in Bangkok, the buzz is heavily around spin studios and it appears everyone just wants more, faster, tougher, more combos and a really intense workout. It’s great to see people trying to work up a sweat and keep healthy!

How often can you spin a week? What are the main benefits from spin?
With spinning, it really depends on your goals and how motivated you are. But it really is something you can do everyday. It’s a great cardio workout with low impact on the body, meaning you are left with much less of a chance with an injury in the spin room given the repetitive motion of the same movement. In today’s spin classes you might find push ups, tab backs, hovering over the saddle, riding out of the saddle, etc. — all to enhance a more full-body workout. And that’s why I think the way we design the classes is great for young professionals who need to squeeze in workout before or after work. My tip: don’t forget to engage your core and entire body the whole time!

What are your top five tips to stay fit and healthy?
For me it’s having a routine. I believe if you have a great routine, everything else will fall into place. I sleep early and always 8-10 hours, I drink two litres of water per day, I take a day off from all exercise at least every two weeks and never forget to stretch. It is so important to give your body some time to heal.

Do you have a regular beauty regimen you can’t go without?
I use Bioderma daily even after I work out or being on the busy streets even if I’m not wearing make-up. It’s very gentle cleansing. Anything Aesop I am obsessed with and I can’t go without my Maison Margiela Untitled scent. And I can’t go a week without yoga. I really need it, especially when I travel. I honestly wake up and see the difference.

What are some favourite brands you love right now that we need to check out?
My Calvin Klein performance tights and crops are always my go-to. Girlfriend Collective tights are made from recycled materials!  Anything from PE Nation and of course the entire Stella Adidas collection any season. Sneakers I need/love/want right now: Golden Goose, Common Projects, Adidas Gazelle in baby pink or blue and the new season Y3!

Lots! I actually have been trying to update my Soundcloud and blog so you can always hear what I’m listening to on there.

Top three places you love to hang out in Bangkok?

Top three places to hang for me are Broccoli Revolution — they have great green juices — Chatuchak markets on Sunday — only the vintage section, though — and 72 Courtyard for a slice of Hong Kong at Little Bao.
